Castelnaud-la-Chapelle on the Dordogne is a wonderful medieval castle set on a hill top facing the river and its arch enemy during the 100 years war Château de Beynac.
The castle has been wonderfully restored and now has a museum of medieval warfare, featuring full size reconstructions of siege engines, mangonneaux, and trebuchets. A really great place to take the kids for a day out and only an hour away....
